Pediatric dentistry is important because your child deserves a healthy mouth, and dental health issues are the most common problem in children of all ages.
About 46% of all kids between the ages of 2-19 years old have at least one cavity, making this the single most common childhood chronic disease.
With pediatric dentistry, you can reduce your child’s risk of developing tooth decay, as well as gum disease and other oral health conditions. Your dentist can also keep an eye on their baby teeth and adult teeth as they grow, and ensure their mouth is developing properly.
For all of these reasons and quite a few more, it’s important for kids of all ages to see a dentist in Coronado or Imperial Beach regularly as they grow. Contact Coronado Dental Associates for an appointment now.
The answer may surprise you. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommends that kids see a dentist for preventive care whenever their first tooth comes out, or when they turn 1 year old, whichever happens first.
If you have an older child, though, the best time to start seeing a dentist is right now. Bring your child into Coronado Dental Associates today, and get them the dental care they need.
Your child’s six-month cleaning and oral exam will be very similar to the treatment received by an adult. First, one of our dental hygienists will clean your child’s teeth by scraping away plaque, buffing them with a high-powered polisher, and flossing the teeth.
Then, Dr. Villalobos will examine your child’s mouth. X-rays may also be taken if they deem it necessary and you approve. After this, Dr. Villalobos will discuss your child’s oral health with you, and any follow-ups that may be necessary. That’s it!
Fluoride treatments are often recommended for kids, as they help prevent cavities. In this treatment, a thin layer of fluoride-rich paste or gel is painted onto your child’s teeth, left in place for a few minutes, and rinsed away. The fluoride helps “remineralize” and strengthen the teeth.
Dental sealants are a good option for especially cavity-prone kids. In this treatment, Dr. Villalobos will apply a thin layer of transparent plastic resin to your child’s rear teeth in liquid form.
Then, this resin will be hardened with a UV light, creating an invisible barrier that stops bacteria, acid, and plaque from contacting the enamel. In turn, this stops the formation of cavities for up to 10 years.
