What Is Sleep Apnea?

The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, known as OSA for short. OSA occurs when the soft tissues of your palate and throat sag into the airway during sleep. The sagging of oral tissue blocks your airway for several seconds at a time, interrupting proper respiration and blood oxygenation.

Sleep apnea occurs in about 3-7% of adult men and about 2-5% of adult women in the United States, making it one of the most common sleep disorders in the country. Many people who have apnea are not even aware that they suffer from this condition.

In the short term, sleep apnea can cause issues like poor quality sleep and daytime drowsiness. And, in the long term, frequent interruptions to breathing and blood oxygenation can raise the risk of heart disease and stroke.

What are the signs of sleep apnea?

If you believe that you or your sleeping partner may have sleep apnea, there are a few signs you can look out for. Snoring with extended pauses in breathing may indicate apnea, particularly when accompanied by gasping or choking sounds when breathing resumes.

People with sleep apnea also often have a dry mouth or sore throat upon waking, or wake up frequently through the night. Morning headaches are a common symptom, and apnea can also make it hard to focus throughout the day, or may cause irritability and mood swings.

In serious cases of apnea, daytime drowsiness may occur, even when you get a full night of sleep. This can be dangerous, particularly if you nod off or feel drowsy while driving a car.

What are my options for Sleep Apnea Treatment?

For severe cases of apnea, a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine is typically recommended. This machine uses a face and nose mask to deliver a stream of gently pressurized air through the airway, preventing tissue from sagging and ensuring proper breathing during sleep.

Oral appliance therapy (OAT) may also be used for more minor cases of apnea. In this treatment, a custom-built oral appliance is made by a dentist such as Dr. Melanie Villalobos or Dr. Margaret Meadows. You wear this during sleep, and the appliance shifts the position of your jaw and prevents your oral tissue from sagging.

Lifestyle changes, such as avoiding alcohol and sedative drugs, losing weight, and exercising regularly have also been shown to help with apnea symptoms, and may be recommended by your doctor.
